How To Stay Safe And Enjoy Airsoft Guns

By Anthony Carter

It is partly down to the realism of airsoft guns that make them so popular. And whilst designed very much for the leisure industry, they have still found favor with many state and federal authorities for training purposes; which simply adds to the appeal for many people.

The main difference to the real cousins is of course to be found in the firing mechanisms, which does not rely on an explosive action. Whilst there are many weapons that can be driven automatically, many still rely on manual intervention. The choice over which design is chosen is down to personal preference really, though compressed gas firing seems to be more popular than spring loads or electrically charged devices.

Whilst the lower end velocity, (at about thirty meters per second), are not likely to cause much harm, the plasticized six millimeter pellets can be fired at double the speed.

Because of this, airsoft guns can be potentially lethal, and despite much public opinion, should not be considered of toys suitable for minors.

Again, this is also down to the very realistic look of the weapons. And, with no rules or laws controlling their possession, it is very much down to your judgment as a responsible owner to control their use and access.

The main issue with the guns surrounds the realism and, although manufactured with a clear bright orange or yellow tip, (which is strictly controlled by federal law), many owners modify their weapons to make them appear realistic.

It is an idiotic action for many reasons; not least that as a direct result of such modifications, there are reported instances of trouble. Occasionally this has resulted in death, as the validity, (or non validity), of the airsoft gun as a real weapon has been in question with the authorities.

Whilst removing the safety devices is to be discouraged, there are many other tips to ensure responsible use is guaranteed.

Under no circumstances should you point your weapon at an individual who is not certain what it is. Being so realistic, it is likely to panic them and could very easily lead to life changing charges being leveled against you.

In the most severe cases, and depending upon which state you are in, it will not matter that airsoft guns are used; it is more to do with how a person perceive a weapon, than how dangerous that weapon actually is.

Even pointing the weapon at somebody fully aware of its nature needs to be done with some consideration. Protective clothing and eyewear is available, and should be used. Whilst relatively low powered, the eyes or ears are susceptible to damage at all times.

Airsoft guns should never be openly carried around either, and never taken into an area where the owner of the premises is not aware you have the weapon. And, if you ever find yourself confronted by a law enforcement officer, gently drop the weapon immediately to ensure your safety, and the safety of those around you. - 31409
