Death Star LEGO Set

By Peter Brando

In 2008 the LEGO Group released the LEGO Death Star 10188 set. Fans were chomping at the bit to be able to add this amazing LEGO set to their collection because of how collectible the Star Wars themed LEGO sets have proven to be. The 10188 LEGO Death Star is the second Death Star released by LEGO and is a bit different from the first set because it was made for actual play rather than just to be displayed.

Besides that, this version came with new LEGO figures that had never been seen previously, including a new version of Luke Skywalker in a Stormtroopers outfit. Han Solo was also fitted with this outfit as seen in the film. Another fantastic inclusion is the ability to recreate the scene in the film where Luke and Leia escape from the Dianoga trash creature.

Boasting 3,803 pieces, the LEGO Death Star 10188 offers four levels of authentic movie settings. Setup is a lengthy process; the spiral-bound instruction book is over 250 pages long, with 193 separate steps to completion.

The instruction book itself is huge with two hundred and fifty pages of step by step instructions on how to build the Death Star. Once completed you will have yourself a very fun build with walls that can be removed, spinning chairs, and rotating guns for different firing angles. With all the detail the set offers you can enjoy hours of realistic play based on scenes from the films. With the different levels on the Death Star playset you have the Emperor's throne room, a hangar bay with Vaders TIE Fighter, an Imperial Conference chamber for meetings, a maintenence area for Droids, and other areas for playing out scenes from the movies.

The LEGO Death Star 10188 brings down the scales at an impressive twenty pounds! Even though it weighs so much and is so detailed it is still a fairly sturdy set for its size. A lot of times LEGO Sets that are this big can be a pain to move around but the Death Star stands up well without falling apart. One of the things to keep an eye on are the Death Ray Lasers. These tend to come off during transport and should be treated with care. One complaint about this LEGO set is that it is not 100 percent true to the films as it contains features from the original Death Star and the Death Star II. This does allow for more playing options but some fans wanted a more accurate model for their collections.

Overall, the LEGO Death Star 10188 playset is well worth its $299.00 price tag; it offers hours of fun, both in building and in playing out your favorite Death Star scenes. The set includes nearly all the central Episode IV and VI characters, making it convenient and easy to portray classic scenes like the Throne Room duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. The set is recommended for ages 12 and up. - 31409
