How A 7 Dollar Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster Toy Came To 453 Dollars

By Laura Robbinson

People that know me say that I am a practical and responsible mother of two lovely girls, but sometimes toy craziness just takes me over. My daughter's sixth birthday was last September and as usual she was keeping her eyes out for what she may like. Bang - the Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters (often pronounced as Zoo Zoo Pets hamsters and Zu Zu Pets hamsters) commercials had started and her mind was made up.

My daughter had already decided that she had to have the Mr Squiggles Zhu Zhu pet hamster and he was much better than all of the others. Her best friend had already got the Num Nums hamster together with a whole hamster habitat and my daughter didn't like the way that one acted! When children of this age go into 'I want toy' mode, you really don't have a chance. It was impossible to sit in front of the TV without that pet hamster commercial coming on and starting my daughter off again. Aren't kid's toy commercials great? Roll on pre-Christmas toy season!

Deciding what to buy for my daughters for their birthdays and Christmas seems to get more and more difficult, so I was actually pleased that my younger daughter's selection had been made for me. I did a quick calculation and thought that I could buy the Mr Squiggles hamster and some hamster house add-ons to create a better hamster habitat than her friends and still have money left over from our 100 dollar birthday limit.

Popping down to my local Walmart and Toys r Us turned up only sold out replies. Not the best response when your daughter's birthday is quickly approaching. I must have driven to every possible toy outlet in the local area for the rest of the afternoon, but everywhere was the same story...no stock...sorry.

Back home and I hit the parent's haven for all things kids related...the internet. They say that the internet is the largest shopping place in the world and sells everything and usually cheaper than the stores...THEY obviously never tried to buy a Mr Squiggles! All my favorite online stores had basically sold out, but there was stock available from people that had bought up the limited Zhu Zhu Pets hamsters and hamster accessories and were selling them at, what I would call, outrageously stupid prices. No way. Not me. Not again. Mr Squiggles and his hamster house will just have to wait.

The next couple of days trying to find out what else my daughter wanted were pointless. Apparently, since Zhu Zhu hamsters came out, all other toys in the world were no longer of any interest. The turning point came when my daughter said to me how she didn't want anything for her birthday but finished by pointing out that all her friends' moms had already got them a Zhu Zhu hamster...and Funhouse...whatever that was.

Bright and early, with phone in hand I was determined that today I would have Mr Squiggles and his plush hamster house. I started ringing all the stores that possibly carried toys in the area, but nothing, continuously hearing the same sorry...sold out, I started to phone stores further and further away. I hit upon a smaller toy shop that had a Mr Squiggles and a Pipsqueak and they were willing to hold them for me for a limited time. My problem was that the store was 43 miles away! The insanity of the situation no longer seemed to matter and into my car I got. The store was by no means easy to find and with the traffic it took forever to get there only to find that the store couldn't hold them any longer and had sold them already. I was not a happy mom and rest assured I let them know that.

With only three more days till my daughter's sixth birthday, no one was now going to tell me that she couldn't have a Zhu Zhu hamster. By the time I arrived home 'the must have toy' insanity had firmly taken me over. With my husband's credit card and super duper high speed internet connection, I was ready to do some shopping. Hamster pet Funhouse at 128.91 added to cart, hamster car and garage at 99.95, added to cart, Mr Squiggles at 37.99, added to cart, hamster bed and blanket set at 59.99, added to cart, Chunk the white hamster at 35.71, added to cart, exercise wheel and tunnel at 36.25, added to cart. Done and with phone calls and gasoline, total cost comes to a budget busting 453.00...give or take a few dollars.

You will be glad to know that my daughter loves her Zhu Zhu pet hamsters and hamster habitat and you literally cannot get her away from them. My husband...not so happy. Guess what our older 8 year old daughter wants for Christmas! Not again. No way. Not me. OK, but I'm going to buy them early before the supply disappears and the prices go up to prices that only a crazy mom would pay! - 31409
