How I Started My Doll Collection

By Caryn Volecci

As a child, growing up in the 80's, my two favorite dolls were the barbies, cabbage patch dolls and strawberry shortcake doll. I remember my mom and my aunt standing in line, camping out at stores for hours, trying to get these dolls for us at Christmas. Each of these dolls was very popular in its time and they have held their value well for doll collectors.

I was fortunate that my family was always able to get me one of my favorite dolls when my birthday rolled around. Nobody ever had to resort to fighting in parking lots to buy me a doll. I saw videos of people actually fighting over dolls back then and it looked ridiculous to me.

My Strawberry Shortcake dolls and accessories still smell of artificial strawberry scent. I took them out of storage the other day and the aroma took me back to my childhood. Sometimes I think I liked the accessories more than the dolls themselves. I try to keep these nice so that I can pass them on eventually.

I was also quite fond of my Barbie dolls during my childhood. My auntie had given me a Bubble Cut Barbie that was especially precious to me. I took it on many adventures. Playing with the many varied Barbie accessories was always tons of fun for me. Barbie's hair always fascinated me and I created many new styles for her.

My uncle built me a special Barbie house that I used constantly. I think that Barbie is one of the most enduring and well loved dolls for girls because you can give her so many different looks and do so many things with her. I was proud of the fact that I never damaged any of my dolls. They were all well kept.

Some Barbie's are made specifically to be collectible. I have some of those, but never aimed to collect them intentionally. They just sort of ended up my collection. Although some Barbies have very nice resale value today, I intend to pass mine on to my children.

Back in the 80's, the cabbage patch doll was also a big hit. I had to have one. So my collection of the cabbage patch doll began. I started out with a cabbage patch with blond hair. I then received the premie cabbage patch doll. I wanted an African American one too, so a year later for Christmas I got one of those as a gift too. I loved going over to my friends house and playing with them.

Memories of dolls like my Cabbage Patches, Strawberry Shortcakes and Barbies all play in to why I am getting so in to collecting now, in my older years. I know that I will continue collecting dolls for years to come. It is a wholesome activity that can bring mothers and daughters together, and as an added bonus, they sometimes end up being quite valuable! - 31409
