Magic Tricks and the History of Magic Shops

By James Anthony

Absolutely anybody can walk into a magic shop and obtain some magic tricks, however just being able to show a trick does not make them a magician. The definitive magic trick is all in creating a special atmosphere for the trick. Magic has always been a performing art. It simply isn't enough to do a trick; It is generally up to the performer to create the atmosphere and magic. The unique difference between a magician and someone who simply performs magic tricks, is simply in the belief of the performer and the effect he can create in his audience.

A magic shop that caters to professional magicians carries many illusions. Rope tricks, balloon tricks and card tricks are just a few which most amateurs can learn without much difficulty. The way in which the magic tricks are presented is what makes the difference. If you want to be convincing, take a look at the way that professional magicians present their illusions.

Comedy magicians have become extremely hip in recent years. Magicians will continue a running dialog of jokes and even appear to make tricks go wrong only to perform more dazzling magic tricks successfully later on. They distract their audiences by keeping them laughing and often use this incredible distraction to prepare their illusions. The comic magician, often famous for his amazing card tricks, would appear to be staggering drunk. The illusions of being drunk was perfect foil to the dexterity which is needed for his card tricks

Methods of misdirection that have become very populary in recent years is the shock factor. This unique skill is perfected by many magician like Chris Angel. Chris angel creates a suspense by seemingly putting himself in impossible and dangerous situations. Often this really is the case and the illusions involve many elements of risks and definitely should not be attempted by an amateur. Even with the perfect preparation, some magic tricks that say involve fire can go horribly wrong. A magic shop usually is extremely careful when selling illusions that involve such danger to non professionals

Before you buy a trick from a magic shop, you should decide how you will present the magic tricks in a way that will entertain your audience while misdirecting them. Most people know that magic is comprised of tricks, yet these same people want to believe that magic is real. The real magic is to create the suspension of disbelief in your audience so that they believe in magic, if only for the duration of your performance.

Learning how to perform an illusion is the smallest part of the magic trick. Creating the atmosphere where the impossible is possible is the most important part. David Copperfield rehearses his audience far more than he spends performing the actual illusion. The incredible Kreskin performs mentalism act and during this he is able to make the audience suspend disbelief by the simple use of subtle suggestions, a little like mass hypnosis. Kreskin has authored a large number of books and has lectured the police force on the use of special techniques for bringing forward memories of witnesses and detecting those lies through the special observation of body language.

If you really want to make your magic tricks convincing, take a look at the different illusions offered by your local magic shop, and think about how you would best present them. Find a good illusion that you know you could present in a way unique to yourself, and for your audience. Magic is a state of mind - 31409
