Building a Basic Magic The Gathering Deck

By Andrew Wong

We're going to talk about how to build a Magic The Gathering Deck that you can play against other planeswalkers. We'll start with the basics. What are required in a playable Magic deck?

You can have 100 or even 1000 cards in a single Magic Deck according the official rules, however in order to play the Magic game in a normal way, you need to make sure the probability of getting a particular card is not too small. In other words, if you have a 1000 cards deck, you will have no way in controlling your playing since you don't know what will come up. The suitable number of cards should be around 60.

Basic content of a Magic Deck is divided into three parts. One third of the deck is Lands, another one third should be Sorcery, Artifact, Enchantment and Instant and the last one third should be Creatures.

Lands are responsible of making Mana. Mana is like money that you need to pay for whatever you want to do in the Magic game. Therefore, Land is vital, without which you would die because you can do nothing but sit there and get slain. When other cards besides Lands are used as main source of Mana, you should ensure that more than 15% of the deck can produce Mana without costing a Mana first. The reason is obvious.

The next one third of the deck which consists of Sorcery, Artifact, Enchantment and Instant is the tools you can use. You can use these to assist your attacks or to construct combo. If you don't need too many assisting spells or combo, you can replace them with attacking spells or creatures.

The last but not least portion of a Magic deck is of course Creatures. These are your main focus. They can attack and they can block attacks. Most of the strategies and combos revolve around creatures. Assisting spells and other abilities are used to make your creatures stronger and the opponent's weaker. There are advanced players who would use less or even no creatures at all, but that very difficult to do because you have find many different methods to attack and to block attacks and to solve all the problems that arise due to lack of Creatures. That's fun to do though.

One thing you must bear in mind when you are building decks is that except Basic Lands, there must not be more than 4 cards with the same name in the same deck.

As you getting more experience of the Magic game, you will understand the complicated dynamic between cards. You will begin to appreciate the value of different cards and the way to release their power. - 31409
